Summer school (3 ECTS included in the SEM 3)
Location: European Scientific Institute, Archamps (France)
Date: End of August
The TOSCA Summer School takes place at the beginning of the third semester at the European Scientific Institute (Archamps, France), near CERN. It introduces participants to the management of large-scale scientific projects, such as particle accelerators, high-power lasers, and gravitational wave detectors.
The one-week programme combines lectures, seminars, and group work, focusing on:
- Governance and organization
- Costing and financing
- Procurement (specifications, tendering, contracts)
- Scheduling, reporting, tracking
- Quality assurance
- Knowledge & technology transfer, intellectual property
- Environmental impact and sustainability
- Communication and outreach
Courses are taught by experienced professionals involved in major European research infrastructures. Participants also work in teams on a case study, presented at the end of the week to a panel of experts.
TOSCA provides both theoretical tools and practical insights, helping develop valuable project management skills in the context of international “big science” collaborations.

Semester 4 (30 ECTS)
Internship and master thesis
Master thesis charter of rules – 2025The master thesis project is an essential component of the students' training, both from the point of view of training and skill assessment. The master thesis project takes place over 4,5 months minimum and 6 months maximum, during the fourth semester, and is worth 30 ECTS. The starting date will depend on the track chosen by the student, from mid-January to mid-March and will end, at the latest, on 31 August. It can be carried out in a research lab of the associated partner institutions or companies who have submitted a thesis proposal/internship offer on the Lascala website or in another place.
